Colorado Governor Jared Polis and her husband Marlon Reis recently tied the knot in an all-vegan wedding. The celebration included a vegan meal prepared by vegan chef Chloe Coscarelli and her team, as well as custom vegan costumes designed by Colorado men’s clothing tailor Machete & Sons. The couple, who married after being together for 17 years, decided to organize a wedding in line with Reis’ values as a vegan and animal rights activist. The marriage also marked the first same-sex marriage for a sitting governor in the United States.

The midday reception menu created by Coscarelli included vegan charcuterie platters that included vegan cheeses, pepperoni slices, crackers, grapes, olives and fresh figs. The lunch buffet included a rosemary cashew roast, butternut squash mac and cheese, roasted carrots with gremolata, miso kale, sweet corn-jalapeno lasagna, and peach caprese skewers- basil. For dessert, the chef served a 12-tier lemon-vanilla wedding cake decorated with white flowers.

“It was an honor and a privilege to cook the vegan wedding of Governor Jared Polis and First Gentleman Marlon Reis with my amazing team,” Coscarelli noted on Instagram. “Congratulations to the most beautiful couple. And thank you to my bosses… for not having slept for a week to make everything perfect.

Polis and Reis also had their costumes custom made by local tailor Machete & Sons using vegan and cruelty-free materials. Surprisingly, the men’s fashion industry still relies heavily on materials derived from animals, right down to the thread for sewing clothes, which are traditionally made from silk or hand-waxed with beeswax.

“Most classic men’s clothing hasn’t changed much since the 1930s and even the Victorian era in terms of materials, so often the buttons are made from animal horns, the fabric is wool, the canvas inside the jacket is made of horsehair or goat hair ”, AJ Machete, co-founder of Machete & Sons Recount media Review 303.

Wedding costumes eventually took around 50 hours to create, and Machete replaced traditional materials with fabrics such as linen and animal-free spinning. Machete worked with Polis and Reis to design the pieces because the couple wanted suits that were versatile enough to be worn for other occasions after the wedding. The resulting suits were classic tuxedos with a 1930s vibe with unique art-deco details on the wrist and vibrant, oversized bow ties.

For the wedding, Machete also created looks for Polis and Reis’ children – their son, Capsian, and daughter, Cora – that match all of their fathers. For Capsian, Machete designed a costume similar to that of his fathers but without the suit jacket. For Cora, he created a bridesmaid dress to match the men’s suits.

Celebrity vegan weddings

Despite this being the first known vegan wedding for an American governor, many others in the public eye have had their own humane nuptials. On Christmas Eve last year, vegan actress and activist Pamela Anderson married her bodyguard Dan Hayhurst in an intimate backyard wedding. The celebration included a decadent two-tier vegan coconut cake, topped with a glass deer ornament, white carnation, and glittering heart.

In 2018, vegan entrepreneur Kat Von D hosted a gothic-style vegan wedding celebration with her partner Leafar Seyer in Beverly Hills. The celebration included elegant appetizers and a five-course dinner with dishes such as spicy corn empanadas, corn tortellini and a harvest vegan roast, as well as a spectacular ornate red velvet castle cake. of gilded lead and towers surmounted by arrows. For Von D’s wedding outfit, she chose a lavish red wedding dress made by LA-based designer Adolfo Sanchez, which featured a dramatic train, long sleeves and a cape.
