Edinburgh shops, restaurants, hotels and events open in 2022

After another extremely below-par year in 2021, Edinburgh has a lot on the horizon for what will hopefully be a 2022 plus without Covid.

While events and the hospitality industry may have temporarily rebounded and started to attract customers again, the Omicron variant shattered hopes for a “normal” end to the year.

Nonetheless, there is much to be hoped for next year, if all goes according to plan. One of the most important is the relaunch of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which will be carried out under a new philosophy.

In addition to the large-scale events, a number of shops and restaurants will be launched in the capital in 2022.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the most engaging and exciting openings and launches for the coming year below:

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

One of Scotland’s most illustrious events will return next year, having been canceled for the first time in its history in the past two years due to Covid.

Back under a new “Performance in a New Light” philosophy, with several different senior organizers, the Tattoo is set for a comeback to remind fans what they’ve been missing.

There is also a new and improved digital ticketing system that has been put in place to make it easier to run the show, as well as benefit packages for multiple members.

The show runs August 5-27 and tickets are on sale now.

Shows at the Edinburgh Playhouse

The show will feature 50 different actors, singers and dancers to tell the famous story.

With a welcome return from the Edinburgh Playhouse in 2021, lineups have been spotted for theatergoers almost every weekend since their reopening.

Shows such as Beauty And The Beast have drawn thousands of customers, with an impressive 2022 lineup on the cards as well.

Sadly, a whole slew of shows for the end of this year and the start of 2022 have been canceled due to recent guidelines from Covid, but there should be a lot to look forward to.

Disney’s Lion King is set to return to the capital between June 2 and July 2, along with The Greatest Showman sing-a-long and Bat Out Oh Hell.

The St James district has continued to add impressive restaurants to its program since the return formulated in the summer.

Following the completion of the £ 1billion redevelopment of the St James Quarter over the summer, the center has once again become one of the largest retail and dining centers in the country.

A host of impressive and attractive stores such as Next, Tommy Hilfiger, JD Sports and Lego have landed in St James Quarter.

Besides impressive shops, several international restaurants have been established in the center, such as Bonnie & Wild Market, The Alchemist, Salerno Pizza and Wingstop.

Looking ahead to 2022, St James Quarter should strengthen its gastronomic destinations. As previously reported on Edinburgh Live, the 24-hour dining experience Duck & Waffle is set to launch its first Scottish venue in the center next year.

For the first time in 96 years of history, Gleneagles, the world-renowned golf course, extends beyond its origins in Perthshire and opens a luxury mansion in spring 2022.

The hotel will consist of 33 rooms, an all-day restaurant and a charming rooftop member club bar.

As well as operating as a luxury hotel, it will also occupy one of the capital’s most historic buildings located in St. Andrew Square, with iconic Edinburgh skyline views.

Megastore Aldi

Perhaps not as glamorous as the above, Aldi does attract a strong customer base however. As the supermarket chain has grown in popularity in the city over the past few years, the demand for more stores has increased.

Plans for a new ‘megastore’ in West Lothian have been revealed for 2022, as part of the company’s new £ 24million investment in Scotland.

The site of the new West Lothian store will be in Broxburn and will help create hundreds of new jobs, while allowing residents to travel a much shorter distance for their groceries.
