Popular frozen foods sold in New York should be thrown out

A popular food item that may be in your freezer has been recalled. Officials say the food is contaminated “which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections”.

Frozen Food Development is voluntarily recalling specific lots of 12-ounce packages of Lidl-brand frozen chopped spinach, the FDA warns. The recalled item was sold in stores in New York City as well as stores in eight other states.

The product is being recalled because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA.

“Although healthy people only experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women,” the FDA said in its recall.

As of this writing, there have been no reported illnesses related to this issue, according to the FDA.
