SW Railway begins development of heritage stations in K’taka

Bangalore, July 13 (IANS) South-Western Railway, Bengaluru Division has started to shape its grand plan to develop four of the oldest railway stations surrounding Bengaluru as heritage stations.

Ashok Kumar Verma, Divisional Director of Railways, Bengaluru, laid the foundation stone for the restoration of Doddajala Station as a heritage railway station, as part of the grand plan.

The Division had signed a memorandum of understanding with INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage) on February 25 in this regard.

The MoU aims to restore and preserve the heritage railway stations of Doddajala, Devanahalli, Avatihalli and Nandi Halt on the basis of different themes related to history and culture.

A conventional art center-cultural center-center will be developed in Doddajala, while in Devanahalli, a monument and history interpretation center and a café or snack bar will be set up.

Silk museum and resource center as well as park, with appropriate tree planting and landscaping will be realized in Avathihalli, railway museum, cafe, restaurant, cultural performance center, markets weekend arts and crafts, an interpretation center, open-air theater and amphitheater will be provided at the Nandi stop station.

It is one of the oldest railway lines in the region. These buildings are picturesque examples of colonial-style architecture set in scenic expanses. The metric gauge line became operational in August 1915.

The work will take place in two stages. In the first step, INTACH will undertake the renovation, restoration and preservation of the station buildings in consultation with the railways and identify CSR partners to fund the initiative.

In a second stage, the ways and means of sustainable maintenance of the preserved and restored buildings will be developed by creating additional equipment in the stations and around them.

This is the first initiative in the southwestern railroad where the restoration project is taken up within the framework of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The Bengaluru Division of the Southwest Railway has plans to restore and preserve its station buildings to enhance their heritage value, the foundation stone ceremony was held at Doddajala station on July 12.
