Restaurants have been put to the test this year. Many have been forced to pivot, reinvent, or entirely reinvent their business. Some were unable to bear it. But the owners of those who did are now grateful that they have the opportunity to do what they do best again – providing great food, wine and souvenirs.

Despite the challenges, more than 2,900 restaurants have won the Restaurant Awards from Wine spectator in 2021. The winners represent all 50 states and 72 countries and territories. The awards are presented in three categories: Award of Excellence, Best Award of Excellence and Grand Prize.

“Win a restaurant award from Wine spectator means you’re in the company of the world’s greatest beverage programs, ”said Zachary Kameron, wine director for the new winner of the Best of Award of Excellence Peak in New York. “For me personally, that means validation for all nights, storing the marathon sessions, tirelessly studying inventories and distributor offerings, and all the other effort involved in developing a wine program.”

The Award of Excellence is presented to restaurants with thoughtfully chosen selections, tailored to the cuisine and representative of a range of regions and styles. These listings can vary in size but typically offer 90 or more options. This year, 1,673 restaurants won the award of excellence.

The Best of Award of Excellence rewards wine programs that go even further. These lists typically have 300 or more selections and offer both vintage depth and regional breadth, with most wine-growing territories represented. A total of 1,141 restaurants received the Best of Award of Excellence in 2021.

The Grand Award is the program’s highest honor, recognizing world-class wine lists. This award is given to restaurants that demonstrate the greatest dedication to the quality of their wine program. Typically, with 1,000 or more selections, these lists feature immense depth and breadth of regions, producers, vintages and bottle sizes. In addition to impeccable presentation and service, all Grand Prix winners must also pass a rigorous inspection of their restaurants, including wine cellars.

Wine spectator is pleased to recognize three new restaurants with our Grand Award this year: Brennan’s in New Orleans, Le Bernardin in New York and SingleThread Farms in Healdsburg, California.
