The 15the The annual Empty Bowl benefit for Hospitality House returned for the entire month of September with a new restaurant-hosted format, filling many bowls of hope for the homeless community. The fundraiser raised just under $ 30,000 for Hospitality House to directly help homeless people receive emergency shelter, food, case management, housing assistance , medical respite and more.

The success of the event was largely made possible by the artist community, which year after year continues to create and donate bowls by the hundreds. Seven restaurants, including Sopa Thai Cuisine, Tofanelli’s Gold Country Bistro, Lola at The National Exchange Hotel, Golden Gate Saloon at The Holbrooke Hotel, fudenjüce, Heartwood Eatery and Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co., were all star hosts at the event, attended by hundreds of locals who sponsored the event, corporate sponsors, as well as event donors and volunteers.

“With a major change in our event format to increase safety, we didn’t know what to expect in terms of interest or involvement, but our community came in droves as always,” said Ashley Quadros, director of development and event planner. at the House of Hospitality. “Many ticket holders took part in our flash art sale to increase their bowl collections while others went above and beyond to patronize their restaurant of choice with food and drink supplements, creating a domino effect of community support and fellowship. “

The empty bowl serves as a permanent reminder of what a simple bowl of soup and food really means to someone who is hungry and struggling on the streets without a home. In 2020, Hospitality House served over 70,000 meals and every meal provided was greeted with gratitude by locals in need, such as current homeless shelter guest Mark Burton. Once the owner of a successful business with five homes, Burton became homeless after a series of unfortunate events. In June 2021, he turned to Hospitality House for help and was greeted by caring staff who provided stability and support without judgment. Today, Burton maintains his sobriety and case managers put him in touch with much-needed medical services, resulting in hernia surgery and ongoing chiropractic care. Burton re-learns his self-esteem and benefits from case management, the computer skills training program offered at the shelter, as well as being a guard (someone who helps with day-to-day operations). Burton finally heals both body and mind. Every day he takes one more step toward a return to self-sufficiency and permanent housing, and thanks to Empty Bowl customers and other community donors, one day he will.
