Pearl pheasant to take to the Cultural Heritage Center on October 2
PIERRE, SD – Saturday, October 2 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. CDT (9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. MDT) at the Pierre Cultural Heritage Center will feature a pheasant.
Pipe cleaners and beads are made into the South Dakota State Bird, complete with a green head, red eye patch, white collar, and colorful “feather” tail. Visitors can pick up a bag with materials and instructions and take the project home to complete. In addition to written instructions, video instructions for the project are posted on the museum’s website at https://history.sd.gov/museum/education.aspx.
To ensure there are enough bags, museum staff reserve the right to limit the number of bags a person or group can take.
“With the fall in the air and pheasants seemingly appearing around every corner, now is the perfect time to create your own pearl pheasant,†said Jay Smith, director of the museum.
The ring-necked pheasant is native to Asia and was first imported to South Dakota in 1908. The bird’s colorful feathers make it easily recognizable as it settles in the South Dakota landscape. The pheasant became the state bird in 1943.
The museum is open to visitors. Hand sanitizer stations are set up throughout the gallery and visitors are encouraged to maintain a distance of 6 feet while enjoying the galleries.
Admission to the museum is free for all residents of South Dakota and members of the South Dakota State Historical Society. Adult out-of-state visitors pay an admission fee of $ 8 or $ 6 for those aged 60 and over. Museum hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CDT (8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. MDT) Monday through Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. CDT (12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. MDT. ) Sundays and most statutory holidays.
